Supervisor Steve Hurt explained that Fapco can warehouse and fabricate the materials to handle any private labeling scenario. Within the internal supply chain Fapco takes bulk goods into the warehouse, breaks them down and repackages them into smaller qualities, applies the labels, and ships through to distribution centers for retail or consumer purchase.

“In this case our bar coded label can designate the actual bay door of the distribution center, or the dock number of the port the goods will be shipped from,” said Hurt.

“We have a fast turnaround to handle seasonal fluctuations. When the volume demand goes up, we can meet the demand right away. Some parts come in and go out the next day. One customer we have calls us up and delivers the parts the same day. On a couple of occasions, they dropped the components off and actually waited for an hour and took the parts we had finished with them for a rush order. Only by having all the elements on hand in the warehouse is this kind of rapid response service possible,” concluded Hurt.

The packaging experts at Fapco can help you with nearly any packaging needs, providing top-quality private labeling products, cold seal blister packaging, automated small parts kitting and parts procurement, along with many other types of packaging. Get Started with Fapco Inc. today!

Rob Kolecki is the plant manager for Fapco’s high volume packaging systems.  “We can run 33,000 spark plugs per shift.  In a three-shift operation we can run 100,000 a day on each line.  With two high volume chipboard lines, we currently have the capacity to run 200,000 spark plugs a day.”  The high volume chipboard lines can be used to package any small or medium-size part— up to 31/2  by 31/2 by 10 inches tall— from fuel filters to thermostats. Our small parts fulfillment solutions can help maintain efficiency while providing you with top-quality products.

Fapco’s automatic bagging equipment can process individual or multiple items into a poly bag that is either preprinted in up to six colors and/or individually printed with product identification on each unit.  Bagging is an inexpensive and efficient method to package items not requiring extensive protection; Fapco bagged more than seven million items last year.

For the retail point of purchase channel, Fapco’s capacity in blister packaging, clamshell packaging or shrink-wrapping is equally impressive.  A single blister packaging machine can run at rates of up to 18,000 units a day.

High volume parts packaging must be as agile and flexible as possible.  “If our customer needs us to provide single box parts or multi-box parts in an over-pack into a chipboard box, then in a corrugated box to be sent out individually in eight or ten box packs or even skid quantities, we can handle that,” said Kolecki. “There are even times that they want the raw stage parts right back at them to use in production, we can send it back in bulk. Keeping everything here in its raw state makes us more flexible.”

“Remember when you go into the big box stores you can buy one part, or you can buy a contractor pack of 24. Whether it’s a plumbing component or an electrical switch, we are prepared to package and fulfill products in any volume the customer requires,” he said.

Bar coding is usually pre-printed on the card or box but Fapco has the ability to run labels in high volumes as well.  “Bar codes can carry part and lot numbers or carry customer specific information or logos, whatever the customer needs.”

From a seasonal aspect, Kolecki explained Fapco provides a safety net for spikes in demand. “If they have automated equipment in-house, they may run millions year around, and then give us the overflow to handle when they have seasonal spikes in their business.  Whether it’s snow blower parts in the winter, lawn irrigation parts in the spring, or outboard motors in the summertime, when the customer gets hit with peak seasonal demand, that’s when we gear up with the additional capacity for our customers.”

Quick changeovers are also an important factor when looking for a private label parts supplier and a packaging partner.  “Labor is very expensive.  Fapco specializes in flexible setups to run different products and different product groups all in one day.  This is hard to do cost effectively in-house,” concluded Kolecki.

Most manufacturers realize they are not capturing all the potential service and aftermarket parts business in their distribution network.  These parts can range from regular service parts with a short life, such as filters and belts, to replacement components for commonly lost or damaged elements, such as small parts kitting.  Manufacturers producing anything from agricultural equipment and lawn mowers, to medical or marine equipment, are discovering the benefits of increasing profits through private labeling of parts with an integrated partner such as Fapco.

Scott Sloniker, Operations Manager, explained that in the competitive arena of “will fitters” (companies producing similar parts that ‘will fit’ a manufacturer specific model), many manufacturers are turning to private label inventory management and non-traditional supply chains to fight the onslaught of these competitors.

“Regardless if it is electrical components or industrial machinery, if there’s an opportunity to replace or repair a part in the field, there’s a competitor more than happy to provide that part.  To combat this activity, many manufacturers are developing their own private labels.  This could even be at a lower cost or outside of their traditional dealer network—to big box retail stores for example—but it keeps the manufacturers in the game with their own version of the ‘will fitter’ parts to help maintain their market share.”

“It’s like beating the aftermarket “will fitters” at their own game. It’s basically the same exact part but the manufacturer markets the part, distributes and stocks at the retailer to win back some of the lost market share.”

Many manufacturers are realizing, with foreign aftermarket parts flooding the market, private labeling keeps them in the parts game and many times they actually push the competitor off the shelf at the big box store level because the manufacturer brands the parts.

A major advantage Fapco offers in support of a private label program is having the capacity, equipment and experience to quickly package and distribute products with no additional investment by the manufacturer.  “We are very adaptable and nimble.  The manufacturer ships the parts in their raw state off their production lines to us and we take it from there,” stated Sloniker. “One of the keys to a successful private label program involves keeping all the elements in their raw state.  In this way the parts and packaging materials can be pulled from the inventory in our warehouse, packaged and fulfilled on an as-needed basis.  Not having packaged parts sitting around on warehouse shelves maximizes the ability to pursue growing categories or markets.”

When Trinity Logistics, a major fastener supplier to the OEM assembly market, wanted to venture into selling product to retail through their own branded catalog, Fapco was able to receive product in its bulk state, package it in the quantities needed, and fulfill it back to Trinity to handle the retail demand.

“They sell their fasteners in multi-levels–50 per box to 500 per box.  In which case we receive and retain the product in bulk, and package to whatever their sales network requires,” explains Fapco Operations Manager, Scott Sloniker. “It was an unknown how the ordering would go.  There was replenishment built into the system for mid and max levels.  This is where we really shine on handling flexible capacity to retail.”

He went on to explain that since Trinity is a major supplier of fasteners to the agricultural industry, where their catalog is distributed, the flexibility to drastically increase shipments timed with spring plowing and fall repair are key. Distribution is to the individual farmer and to the distributor retailer.

Dan Zehnder, CEO of Trinity, explains how Fapco helps meet the flex demands of his retail catalog Ag business.  “Fapco helps us by being a highly responsive organization. They handle short notice requirements that must be dealt with immediately.  Their processes allow for the flexibility to deal with interruptions that may occur.  If you have the time to plan ahead that’s great but when an urgent order comes through, Fapco handles it as well,” he states.

Zehnder explains that Trinity sets up retail programs with perimeters that predetermine for each dealer what parts quantities will be.  This includes forecasting peak and valleys during the year.  “We plan in advance when we are coming into a busy season.  Fapco then ramps up in advance of that to handle our packaging needs.  They are always working with us to look ahead to see what’s coming.  Good forward planning with a partner like this is key.”

Zehnder expects his fastener packaging partnership with Fapco to grow as Trinity opens new markets. “Trinity and Fapco are in the process of developing more integrated systems with more automated data operating systems to increase accuracy and increased their involvement with our distribution network.  We want our relationship with Fapco to grow.”
